1、If a woman conceals her affection with the same skill from the object of it, she may lose the opportunity of fixing him; and it will then be but poor consolation to believe the world equally in the dark.
（1）说明无论男女，如果有了心仪之人，该出手就出手吧！[微笑]
（2）conceal……from对……隐瞒；in the dark在黑暗中，不知道；if引导条件状语从句。
（3）参考译文：要是一个女人采用这种技巧向心上人隐瞒了自己的爱慕之情，那就可能没有机会博得他的欢心。这样一来，即使她自以为同样瞒过了天下所有的人，也没有什么好欣慰的。
2、Not as you represent it. Had she merely dined with him, she might only have discovered whether he had a good appetite; but you must remember that four evenings have also been spent together—and four evenings may do a great deal.
（1）说明宾利和简虽然见面不多，但是已经有了一定了解，毕竟两人曾经待过四个晚上。
（2）represent声称，说明；had……appetite是虚拟语气，其中的had……with him是倒装结构，正常顺序是If she had……him；but是并列连词，表示转折关系。
（3）参考译文：事情并不像你说的那样。假如仅仅跟他吃吃饭，简兴许只会发现他胃口好不好。可你别忘了，他们还在一起待了四个晚上呢——四个晚上的作用可就大啦。
