Not all power systems operate with phase sequence a, b, c, or its equivalent. There are several large electric utilities in the United States that operate with a, c, b phase sequence. The specific phase sequence is only a name designation that was established arbitrarily early in the history of a company, and it is difficult to change after many years of operation.

This is especially true if it is not a, b, c. The connections from a, b, c to a, c, b or vice versa can generally be made by completely interchanging phases b and c for both the equipment and the connections.
