We passed by The Rotorua Museum Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa which is a local museum and art gallery located in Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, North Island, The museum is housed in the old Bath House building which was opened in 1908 and is noted as the first major investment in the New Zealand tourism industry by the government. It is located in the Government Gardens near the centre of the city. The museum is currently closed as of 18 November 2016 due not meeting stringent NZ earthquake standards and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Rotorua Museum opened in the south wing of the Bath House in 1969; Rotorua Art Gallery opened in the north wing in 1977.
In 1988, the museum and gallery combined to form the Rotorua Museum of Art and History. Lars-Eric Lindblad was a Swedish-American entrepreneur and explorer, who pioneered tourism to many remote and exotic parts of the world. He led the first tourist expedition to Antarctica in 1966[1] in a chartered Argentine navy ship, and for many years operated his own vessel, the MS Lindblad Explorer, in the region. Observers point to the Lindblad Explorer’s 1969 expeditionary cruise to Antarctica as the frontrunner to today’s sea-based tourism there. Sequoia sempervirens is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae (formerly treated in Taxodiaceae). Common names include coast redwood, coastal redwood and California redwood, It is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living 1,200–1,800 years or more. This species includes the tallest living trees on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet in height (without the roots) and up to 29.2 feet (8.9 m) in diameter at breast height (dbh). These trees are also among the oldest living things on Earth. Before commercial logging and clearing began by the 1850s, this massive tree occurred naturally in an estimated 2,100,000 acres (8,500 km2) along much of coastal California and the southwestern corner of coastal Oregon within the United States. Ohinemutu is a suburb in Rotorua, New Zealand. It is a living Māori village and the original settlement of Rotorua.
