此举是中国领先的社交媒体和娱乐巨头的另一项重大让步，其标志性应用微信承载着超过10亿中国人的日常事务。腾讯与阿里巴巴集团控股有限公司（Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.）和字节跳动有限公司（ByteDance Ltd.）一起控制着中国互联网的大片领域，之前允许升级到最新版本微信的用户只在一对一的对话中访问外部链接。作为周一公布的最新变化的一部分，腾讯已经取消了每次用户点击外部链接时弹出的“警告”页面。
