The room temperature structure of magnetized steel is required to be stable austenite. This is because ferrite, pearlite and martensite are ferromagnetic at room temperature and exhibit strong magnetization in the magnetic field with high permeability, while austenite with facial-centered cubic structure is paramagnetic with low permeability. By expanding the austenite zone of FE-C alloy phase diagram with appropriate alloying elements and heat treatment methods, a stable single-phase austenite structure can be obtained at room temperature, thus keeping the permeability of the steel material at a low level.
