Preface

倘以绝对海拔高度来言说嵩山，若把它放置到中国版图上许多雄伟的大山面前来观之，它那海拔仅1512米的身高，简直可谓小巫见大巫；然而，嵩山却偏偏因其35亿岁之高龄，而在地质学上享有了“百科全书”之崇高地位，甚至享有“五世同堂”的“万山之祖”之尊荣。
If we look at Mount Songfrom the perspective of human geography, we could find out from the map ofhistory that there are famous ancient Chinese capitals scattered around itwithin a hundred kilometers of its foot, such as the Xia Dynasty’s legendarycapital Yanshi, Luoyang, Zhengzhou,Kaifeng, Anyangand Xuchang. Therefore, Mount Song enjoys a sacredstatus in the history of the Chinese nation as "the Centrality of Heavenand Earth". Because of this, in the first collection of poems in the historyof Chinese literature, (),Song Mount earned the praise of "The four mountains are high; Theirsummits touch the sky". And Sima Qian in his book (), which is admired as "Li Sao without rhyme",describes Mount Song as followed, "The three previous emperors all locatedtheir states at the conjunction of yellow River and Luo River, therefore MountSong (which is located at the conjunction) was regard as the centrality."
