Roger Williams罗杰·威廉姆斯

Roger Williams was an English theologian and founder of the colony of Rhode Island in the 17th century. Born in London in 1603, Williams was trained as a Puritan minister and later became disillusioned with the established church. He believed in the separation of church and state, and was a strong advocate for religious freedom and tolerance.

In 1631, Williams emigrated to America and settled in Massachusetts Bay Colony, where he became a minister in the new Puritan community. However, he soon ran afoul of the colonial authorities for his radical beliefs, particularly his argument that religious liberty was a necessary principle for any society to prosper. He was convicted of disseminating new and dangerous opinions, and was banished from the Massachusetts colony in 1635.
