After leaving Massachusetts, Williams travelled south and founded the colony of Rhode Island in 1636. He established it as a safe haven for individuals who were persecuted for their religious beliefs, and created a government based on the principles of democracy and individual liberty. The colony rapidly grew and became known for its religious and political freedoms, becoming a refuge for Quakers, Baptists, and other groups.
